While the throughput of microprocessor systems tends to increase as a result of ongoing technology scaling and the advent of multi-core systems, the off-chip I/O communication bandwidth emerges as one of the potential bottlenecks that limit overall performance. In order to alleviate the communication speed constraints, optical data communication interfaces move ever closer to the processor core. It is widely expected that future generation digital systems will increasingly rely on chip-to-chip and board-to-board optical data communications for higher bandwidth and better noise immunity.
This book focuses on optical communications for short and very short distance applications and discusses the monolithic integration of optical receivers with processing elements in standard CMOS technologies. CMOS Multi-Channel Single-Chip Receivers for Multi-Gigabit Optical Data Communications provides the reader with the necessary background knowledge to fully understand the trade-offs in short-distance communication receiver design and presents the key issues to be addressed in the development of such receivers in CMOS technologies. Moreover, novel design approaches are presented. A system-level design methodology allows for the impact analysis of different block specifications and system-wide design optimization. Statistical models are used for design space exploration in the scope of jitter tolerance analysis of clock recovery circuits.

Ultra-wideband (UWB) is a promising technology for high speed short distance communication, as well as low data-rate low power communication for object localization and sensor networks. The most important characteristic of UWB is the operation in power-limited regime while achieving high channel capacity. The main challenge lies in designing transceivers for wideband signals.
Distributed integrated circuits provide intrinsic wideband characteristics, which makes them potential candidate for use in UWB transceivers. Recent advances in high-speed IC design with continuous scaling of minimum feature sizes of silicon technologies have renewed the interest in distributed circuits using on-chip transmission lines.
Silicon-Based RF Front-Ends for UWB Radios comprehensively studies silicon-based distributed architectures in wideband circuits.
The book begins with an introduction of several transceiver architectures for UWB. The discussion then focuses on RF front-end of the UWB radio. First, the design and analysis of a performance-optimized CMOS distributed LNA is presented. This is followed by design of novel distributed RF front-ends for UWB IF-receivers (UWB-DRF). The book continues with the introduction of a novel distributed direct conversion RF front-end (DDC-RF). The DDC-RF power and area-efficiently combines the wideband distributed approach with IQ requirement of a direct conversion receiver. Furthermore, deploying merged LNA/mixer enables low-power design, while achieving superior linearity over the conventional distributed amplifiers. The baseband output signals are zero/ low-IF, hence the output transmission lines in conventional distributed circuits are omitted, resulting in less area of the DDC-RF.
To increase data rate and to achieve immunity to multi-path fading, UWB systems employs multi-antenna configuration at receiver/transmitter. Innovative wideband variable delay and gain stages are then introduced to receive and transmit in desired direction. Finally, experimental results of the fabricated prototypes are presented.
Silicon-Based RF Front-Ends for UWB Radios will be of interest to RF circuit designers and students.

Will nanoelectronic devices continue to scale according to Moore’s law? At this moment, there is no easy answer since gate scaling is rapidly emerging as a serious roadblock for the evolution of CMOS technology. Channel engineering based on high-mobility semiconductor materials (e.g. strained Si, alternative orientation substrates, Ge or III-V compounds) could help overcome the obstacles since they offer performance enhancement. There are several concerns though. Do we know how to make complex engineered substrates (e.g. Germanium-on-Insulator)? Which are the best interface passivation methodologies and (high-k) gate dielectrics on Ge and III-V compounds? Can we process these materials in short channel transistors using flows, toolsets and know how similar to that in Si technology? How do these materials and devices behave at the nanoscale? The reader will get a clear view of what has been done so far, what is the state-of-the-art and which are the main challenges ahead before we come any close to a viable Ge and III-V MOS technology.

Various approaches for finding optimal values for the parameters of analog cells, like op amps, have been investigated since the mid-1980s, and they have made their entrance in commercial applications. However, a larger impact on the performance is expected if tools are developed which operate on a higher abstraction level and consider multiple architectural choices to realize a particular functionality. High-Level Modeling and Synthesis of Analog Integrated Systems examines the opportunities, conditions, problems, solutions and systematic methodologies for this new generation of analog CAD tools.
A new design paradigm is defined for high-level synthesis of AMS systems: the high-level design flow based on generic behavior. This design approach involves a modeling strategy using generic behavioral models and a synthesis strategy leading to the exploration of a heterogeneous design space containing different architectures. In High-Level Modeling and Synthesis of Analog Integrated Systems, two novel generic behavioral models are described. The first one adopts a time-domain approach and is suited for classes like Delta-Sigma modulators and sampled-data systems. For the second model, a new frequency-domain framework has been developed (the Phase- Frequency Transfer model) which allows the representation of classes of RF systems like front-ends of wireless receivers. To complete the high-level design strategy, the synthesis strategy has been concretized with a new top-down heterogeneous optimization algorithm.
The general high-level design methodology for AMS systems and its concrete applications developed in this book serve as a fundamental framework for a new generation of analog CAD tools. By providing support for automated design space exploration at the architectural level, they realize an increase in design productivity.
